Through obstacles to self-efficacy

In my talks I share twenty years of experience as a professional parkour athlete: Moments of pure freedom on rooftops, life-changing challenges, and situations where failure would have meant the end.

Out of that grew a perspective of my own: How we overcome obstacles, how we deal with fear, and how movement turns into self-efficacy. Honest, approachable, and with one clear message: Through obstacles to self-efficacy.

Why self-efficacy?

Self-efficacy is not a topic I picked out for a talk. It runs through my whole life.

As a child it was simply the joy of sport, of moving, of trying things out. Then came parkour, and the foundation was laid. No coach, no having to, no plan. Just an inner drive that I let run free.

Was it easy? Not at all. Fear was a constant companion, before every single jump. And that was exactly what had to be overcome, jump by jump, challenge by challenge. Because without trust in your own abilities you do not jump. That trust is not handed to you, it grows only through doing.

Then came a second realisation: A jump only works once I consciously decide to make it. Half wanting is not enough. I repeated that principle a thousand times over, until it became second nature. And at some point I noticed that it had long stopped being about jumps. It runs through everything.

And the challenges grew along with me. First it was jumps, then live parkour shows in front of an audience, later commercial work and TV formats, most recently the outdoor adventures. The tasks got bigger and the stakes got higher, but the principle stayed the same: Look, decide, do.

What I took from all of it: I can do anything, as long as I face myself again and again. And it always starts in the body. Movement makes that experience immediate, because there you feel right away whether you have truly decided or only half.
